- Exercise is a negative stimulus that challenges the body, leading to muscle breakdown.
- Skeletal muscles have multidirectional motion – contracting (concentric) and resisting (eccentric).
- Muscles rarely work in isolation. When primary muscles reach their limit, adjacent muscles pitch in to assist, leading to the activation of multiple muscle groups.
Remember that your body has innate intelligence. This means that one 10-20 minute full-body workout each week consisting of these 5 compound movements will provide you with exceptional results. Keep in mind that intensity is crucial – go all out in each set, with 45-90 seconds per repetition, leading to a decrease in force generation.
How It Works
Let's talk for a second about how this works. Say the maximum you can bench press once is 100 pounds, meaning that's the most you can push away from your chest through your full range of motion one time. Then say you can only push 90 pounds the second time, 80 pounds the third time, 70 pounds the fourth, and then finally 60 pounds. At this point, you've reached what we call "momentary muscle failure" and can no longer contract the muscle for one more push. Your body has experienced enough stimulus (exercise) to signal an adaptive response or change that results in stronger and denser muscle tissue (hypertrophy). The Big Five routine gets you to this point for muscles in your whole body, and doing them on the ARX supercharges the process.
